Binance Futures Funding Rate: Payment, Timing and Cost Formula
Calculate a funding payment from position notional, understand positive and negative rates, and monitor changing settlement intervals.
Funding is a periodic payment between long and short holders of perpetual futures. It helps keep the contract near its spot index and is generally not an exchange trading fee.
Checked in July 2026. Rates and settlement intervals change; use the live contract rate and countdown.
| Rate | Long | Short |
|---|---|---|
| Positive | Pays | Receives |
| Negative | Receives | Pays |
Receiving funding is not risk-free. Price movement, trading fees and liquidation can outweigh the payment.
Funding payment formula
Funding payment = position notional at settlement × funding rate
For a 20,000 USDT BTC perpetual long at +0.01%:
20,000 × 0.01% = 2 USDT
The long pays roughly 2 USDT and the short side receives it. Exact valuation and caps depend on contract rules.
Why leverage makes it look expensive
Funding uses notional, not just posted margin. A 20,000 position at 10x may use roughly 2,000 initial margin. A 2 USDT payment is 0.1% of that margin. Higher leverage makes the same funding amount larger relative to margin, although it does not multiply the displayed rate itself.
The interval is not always eight hours
Eight hours is common, but Binance can use other intervals depending on contract and conditions. Read the next funding countdown on the trading page rather than memorizing fixed times.
You normally pay or receive a settlement only if the position remains open at that moment. Closing solely to avoid one payment can cost more in spread, slippage and trading fees.
Estimate a multi-day hold
Do not multiply today's rate across future days as if it were fixed. Build optimistic, base and stress scenarios; include entry/exit fees and slippage; then reconcile each actual funding statement.
Common errors include treating positive funding as a certain reversal signal, assuming the receiving side has no directional risk, multiplying the rate itself by leverage, or ignoring the next settlement time.
See Binance's official funding-rate guide.
⚠️ Funding is a cost and crowding input, not a standalone entry signal.
