Binance One-way vs Hedge Mode: Position and Order Differences
Compare net positioning with separate long and short legs, including order side, margin risk, costs and checks before switching.
One-way Mode nets buys and sells in one contract position. Hedge Mode allows separate LONG and SHORT legs in the same contract. Hedge Mode is not automatically risk-free; it changes accounting and order handling.
| Feature | One-way | Hedge Mode |
|---|---|---|
| Same-contract position | One net direction | LONG and SHORT separate |
| Opposite order | Reduces, closes, then can reverse | Must identify the target side |
| Common safeguard | Reduce Only | Position Side / close control |
| Typical fit | Single-direction strategy | Explicit independent long/short legs |
One-way example
You hold a 1 BTC long and sell 0.4; net becomes 0.6 long. Selling another 0.8 can close 0.6 and open 0.2 short unless a reducing constraint prevents reversal.
Hedge example
The account can show 1 BTC LONG and 0.4 BTC SHORT separately. They are not automatically represented as one 0.6 long. Each leg can create fees, funding and liquidation exposure.
Frequent misconceptions
- Long and short together lock profit: different entries, fees and funding still matter.
- Both legs always have isolated margin: Cross/Isolated and account mode still apply.
- Opening the opposite leg is a stop-loss: the original position still exists.
- Mode can always switch immediately: open positions and orders commonly need attention first.
Consider Hedge Mode only for a defined two-leg strategy where you can manage Position Side and exits separately. Using it to “lock now and decide later” often increases cost and operational confusion.
Before switching
- Any open positions or orders?
- Could old conditional stops hit the wrong side?
- Do APIs/bots send the correct positionSide?
- How do Cross or Isolated rules affect both legs?
- Are funding and fees understood for each side?
Binance's public derivatives parameters distinguish BOTH in One-way from LONG/SHORT position sides in Hedge Mode; use the live account rules for final behavior.
⚠️ Hedge Mode adds flexibility and also adds execution and cost-management complexity. Beginners usually learn One-way first.
